In this interview, Vincent Garnier, Director of the FTTH Council Europe, discusses Europe’s journey toward full fibre-optic connectivity, highlighting significant progress and ongoing challenges. Vincent spoke with LeMagIT during the Network X event in Paris, offering insights into the disparities in fibre adoption across Europe and emphasizing the unique position of France, which leads with 84% coverage and over 20 million subscribers.
He explained that government policies, investment levels, and pricing play critical roles in each country’s adoption rates. France’s decision to price fibre similarly to ADSL has driven rapid adoption, while other nations with higher fibre costs face slower uptake. Additionally, Vincent noted that in countries like Germany and the UK, large budgets are allocated for fibre expansion, yet challenges in project coordination delay progress.
