Registration is now open for the FTTH Conference 2014, taking place 19 – 20 February 2014 – with workshops on 18 February 2014 – at the Stockholmsmässan in Stockholm, Sweden.

The special theme of the 2014 Stockholm event is "FTTH - Showcasing a Brighter Future", highlighting Nordic innovations in fibre access, FTTH-enabled services, business models, etc.. Combining conference sessions with an exhibition, the World of Applications Dome and unparalleled networking opportunities, the FTTH Conference is the largest FTTH-focused event in the world, gathering more than 3,000 participants during its last edition held in London in 2013.

More than 1 million FTTH customers in Sweden

According to the country's regulator, the National Post and Telecom Agency, the total number of fibre customers in Sweden in 2012 reached 1,034,000, against 891,000 at the end of 2011. Fibre connections with speeds of 100 Mbit/s or more reached 755 000 customers, an increase of 41% compared with 2011.

Investor Guru George Soros invests in FTTH

The UK based network operator Hyperoptic recently announced that investor guru George Soros invested 50 million UK pound in their FTTH expansion through his private investment vehicle Quantum. This is a strong signal that professional investors trust the long-term value of fibre infrastructure.

Following the focused activities of the FTTH Council Europe to support the financing of FTTH in Europe, this investment by George Soros is another milestone to accelerate fibre roll-outs in Europe.

The FTTH Council Europe will continue its “Investors Project” that includes a “Nordic FTTH Investors Day” on 10 September in Helsinki, a financing workshop in Brussels in Q4/2013 and a “European Investors Day” in conjunction with the FTTH Conference 2014.

Stockholm fibre network adds billions to economy

A study report from Acreo found that Stokab, the city-owned company providing fibre optic communication networks within the Stockholm region, has generated significant positive benefits to the local economy. Billions of kronor have been contributed to Stockholm's economy thanks to its network of superfast fibre internet and innovative IT infrastructure.

Guiding Europe through the FTTH funding maze

The FTTH Council Europe has heard the argument many times: “there isn’t enough money to finance the roll-out of fibre to the home (FTTH) networks”. Citing the seemingly insurmountable obstacles of shareholder demands, increasing competitive pressure and the economic downturn, operators and politicians claim that they simply cannot afford FTTH networks. But like the emperor’s new clothes, their arguments do not stand up to closer scrutiny.
